Let’s be honest: an old tape or film reel does not look very exciting when it is sitting in a closet, attic, or storage box. But press play, and suddenly it is a birthday party, a family vacation, a wedding, or the voice of someone you have not heard in years.

At Accord Film and Video, we know an old tape is rarely just an old tape. It may hold a family milestone, a familiar voice, or proof that someone once thought that haircut was a very good idea.

That is why we do things a little differently. When you bring your materials to our Coconut Grove office, you are not putting them in a box and hoping they make it through a mystery shipping journey. You can bring them in, ask questions, speak with someone who understands the formats, and get a clear idea of what is involved before we begin.

We have been preserving media in South Florida for more than 30 years, so we have seen plenty of formats that have long since disappeared from most living rooms. Along with the familiar VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Hi8, Video8, 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm film, we also work with professional formats that can be much harder to find equipment for, including U-matic, Betacam, Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, DVCPro, HDCAM, and more.

And sometimes the challenge is not identifying the format—it is getting it to play at all. Tapes and film reels that have spent decades in storage can become brittle, tangled, moldy, or damaged. Those are not always “just put it in the machine” situations. We have an experienced technician in-house who can assess difficult materials and perform repair work when possible, including items that other services may not be set up to handle. We cannot promise that every damaged tape or reel can be recovered, but we can promise that we will take the time to evaluate it carefully and give it the best possible chance.

For film transfers, we use our professional Blackmagic Cintel G3 HDR+ film scanner to digitize 8mm, Super 8, 16mm, and 35mm film. It captures the footage frame by frame and creates digital files that are easier to watch, share with family, and keep safe for the future.
